The two major venues (theatre & concert halls) are where three of the most well known Hungarian folk ensembles perform with great success:

Hungarian State Folk Ensemble
Danube Folk Ensemble
Rajko Folk Ensemble (former Hungaria Folk Ensemble & Orchestra)

Needless to say, the most prestigious folk ensemble is the national dance ensemble, the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble (their regular venue is now Aranytiz Cultural Centre on the Pest side of Budapest). Booking in advance is warmly recommended. Please see our reservation form on the left side.

The more traditional folk dances and music are performed by the Rajko Folk Ensemble and the Danube Folk Ensemble.

Budapest Folk Dances

Each folk show starts at 8 pm in the evening. The folk dance show is from 8 pm to 9:30 pm, performed in 2 shows with a break. The first half of the show is approx. 40 min, then comes a 10 min break, followed by another approx. 40 min act.

When the Folk Dance Show has ended, you can opt for a Danube city cruise to continue your beautiful cultural night in Budapest. The late night cruise leaves at 10 pm from near the Hungarian Folk Show venue. The cruise is 90 minutes in length, with 2 Drinks included in the cruise fee. If you feel hungry, you can upgrade for a cruise ticket with a candle lit Dinner and 2 Drinks. The package price of the Folk Show with the Night Cruise is a good deal. After the show you will be accompanied to the cruise ship by the show hostesses.

Booking Budapest Folk Show

Buda Vígado Concert Hall Budapest

You can book a folk show performance if you are visiting Budapest, the capital city of Hungary. Performances are almost every day from May to late October. The shows are performed by 3 of the best folk ensembles in Hungary. If you are interested in a specific folk ensemble please let us know. Contact info [at] hungarianfolk.com for requests or inquiries.

The tickets come in three categories: Category 1, Category 2 and Category 3: check the Seating Plan of Budapest Folk Shows here. The first class tickets are the best seats to see the Hungarian Folk Show, second class tickets offer very good viewing, while 3rd class show tickets are with good views of the dance show.

The shows are mostly held in the historical heart of Budapest city in Aranytiz Cultural Centre (with a few exceptions when two historical concert halls may feature the shows, e.g. in the Danube Palace in the city center on the Pest side, or near Batthyany Square in the Buda Vigado Concert Hall on the Buda side (at the Buda Castle hill). We will let you know in your confirmation of the ticket reservation of the exact venue, and how you can get there. At your special request, we can give you a detailed itinerary (usually guests need to know the way from their hotel to the Folk Show venue).

You can also buy the folk show tickets in a night program package: Hungarian Folk Show followed by a 1.5 hour Danube cruise in the city.

I am sorry to say that there are no folk show performances on August 20 in either the Danube Palace or in Buda Vigado theater. August 20 is a special holiday in Hungary with Fireworks show on the Danube, special cruises, street concerts. The Hungarian folk shows are scheduled for the following days in the second half of August:
18. 19. 21. 22. 23. 25. 26. 27. 28. 29. 30, but there is no date set for August 20 because the folk ensembles are having a break on this special holiday.

Dear Michele, on September 2 the Danube Folk Ensemble will perform in the Danube Palace in Budapest city center, while the next day, on September 3 the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble will perform in the Buda Vigado Concert Hall on Corvin Square.

As in theaters, the better the visibility of the performance, the higher the ticket categories are. Category 1 tickets are in the middle section of the stalls, Category 2 tickets are the first few rows at the stage, and the farther away rows of the stalls, while Category 3 tickets for the folk shows are the farthest from the stage.
The Danube Palace theater hall also has a balcony, whose first row seats are Cat 1, next rows are Cat 2 and back rows are Cat 3.

It is the general ticket category system in Budapest that the best visibility of the show is Category 1, a bit less good is Category 2, and the peripheral rows are Category 3 (the same applies in the Hungarian State Opera House, the Operetta Theater, etc.)

Hello Mary,
I am sorry to say that the folk shows between September 27 and 29, both of them, take place in the Danube Palace on the Pest side, not in Budai Vigado on the Buda side (there are Hungarian folk shows on the Buda side on September 26 and 30, just outside of the range you have specified). The Hungarian State Folk Ensemble’s shows are in the Budai Vigado.
The folk dance shows and music on September 27 and 29 are performed by the similarly called, but different Hungaria Folk Ensemble and Orchestra (the formation was formerly known as Rajko Folk Ensemble) with a 6-8 Hungarian Gypsy Band and many dancers.

If you really do not want to miss the Folk Show, the distance is in fact not that much. I have checked the public transport and the taxi fares for crossing the river to the Pest side folk shows, just in case.

The Danube Palace might be on the other side of the river Danube, but the distance is very short, let’s say from Bem Rakpart Quay where Hotel Viktoria is, the distance is 10 min by car (by taxi the one way trip costs approx. HUF 1100 – 1400), or you can take the bus 105, or 16 to take you over the Chain Bridge from the Tunnel to Jozsef Nador Square, and you can use the public bus after the folk show at around 10 pm too.

Hello Adele, the folk dance show on September 22 at 8 pm is performed by the Hungaria Folk Ensemble (former Rajko Folk Ensemble Gypsy musicians and gypsy/ folk dancers) in Budai Vigado (Buda side of Budapest), and the Hungarian folk show on September 25 is by the Danube Folk Ensemble in the Danube Palace at 8 pm (Pest side, city center).

The folk dance show in Budapest on September 23 and 25 at 8 pm is performed by the Danube Folk Ensemble in the Danube Palace (Pest side of central Budapest), and the Hungarian folk show on September 24 and 26 are performed by the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble in Budai Vigado at 8 pm (Buda side, near Batthyany Square).

Hello Eva, we do not ask tourists to go to a printer, it would be quite impossible for many. You can show the ticket on your cell phone, no need to print (we match the payment IDs with the other details). You can certainly buy the remaining tickets in the ticket office, if any left for a category. There are two locations for the shows, and it depends on the day of show where the show is and where the ticket office is. Do you know your date already?

The Hungarian folk show performance and theater on October 8: performed by Hungarian State Folk Ensemble in Buda Vigado Theater on the Buda side of Budapest. The dance show starts at 8 pm.
The Hungarian folk show performance and theater on October 9: performed by Danube Folk Ensemble in Danube Palace on the Pest side of Budapest. The dance show starts at 8 pm.
Ticket categories are like in theaters and opera houses: Category 1 offers the best views and acoustics, Category 2 is the second best and Category 3 seats are usually by immediately at the stage, in the back rows of the stalls and balcony (value, more peripheral seats).

the October 3rd folk dance show is in the Budai Vigado in Buda (Buda side Budapest), the performance is given by the best national dancers of the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble. The show starts at 8 pm. (As usual, there is a river cruise after the show, which can be bought together if you wish to get two programs for that night.)

Hello Kelsey, he Hungarian folk dance show will be in the Danube Palace in District 5 in Budapest, which is the city center. The shows on both days, December 28 and 29, 2013 are in the palace. The performing ensemble is the former Rajko Ensemble now known as Hungaria Orchestra and Folk Ensemble (dance group and musicians). The folk shows always start at 8 pm.

There is no presentation on April 16, 2014.

The shows start at 8 pm and finish around 9.30 pm. The folk shows will be in the Danube Palace in Budapest city center.

Festival including Hungarian folk dance show

Perhaps the Sausage Festival weekend in Fonyod town by the Lake Balaton in western Hungary is a good program for you supposing you are not vegetarian or even love sausages.
The Sausage festival in Fonyod always includes some short local folk dance shows, on February 7 scheduled at 5:30 pm you can see a traditional Hungarian cowboy’s dance, 17:30 Fonyódi Betyárok, on Saturday morning a folk dance show (not specified what region or style) 10:10 Néptánc bemutató. The scheduled times may change. You can take a train from Budapest to Fonyód. As there are fast trains, the trip can be about 2-3 hours only if you get on an express train at Deli Railway Station

I have also written to the Ungaresca folk dance group in Szombathely but there has been no answer, perhaps they don’t speak English… Would you happen to know will they perform anywhere in Hungary during February?

Sorry, Lisa, I do not know. Their website is also quite outdated, so it may be better to call them via phone to find out about upcoming folk events. Please do check the festival date before going as festival organizers often reserve the right to make changes due to weather conditions or for some other reason. Do not invest in the trip unless you make sure the date has not been changed, and the hour of the shows is as scheduled. Have a nice time!

Hello Shuri, June can be quite popular as the summer season sees many tourist groups attending the Hungarian folk show from all over the world. I would recommend booking the dance show 2-3 days in advance when your June schedule in Budapest is clearer. Each show starts at 8 pm in the evening.

Hello Lydia, the Hungarian folk dance show on Oct 8, 10 are by the Danube Folk Ensemble in the Danube Palace, Pest side of Budapest. Oct 9 the show is in Budai Vigado performed by the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble on the Buda side of Budapest.

After the cruise you can ask the hostess to order you a taxi back to the hotel as public transport is scarce after 11 pm, and walking distance is only short to city centre hotels in Budapest.

Hello Myrna, the 2015 dates have not been fixed yet but hopefully April will bring several dance shows for the public: usually the shows are scheduled for Saturday nights in April and around the Easter holiday as part of the Budapest Spring Festival and Easter festivities.

Hello Julie, yes, there is a student rate for the folk show and river cruise programme. The cruise starts after the folk show at 10 pm and finishes at 11:30 pm so it might be quite late for your little ones (3-4 year old children). The student discount is for children under 14 and for students with a valid photo student ID.
Ticket prices of the packages vary for students depending on the category of the folk show ticket:

Hello Stella, free programs are usually in festivals, like Duna Karneval folk dance festival in Budapest (Danube Carneval) in the summer, or often on national holidays. You may see a show on October 23 as part of a national celebration, or on March 15, at Easter, around August 20.
There are many cheap folk dance houses for beginners in Budapest where you could try and learn some steps. You are very welcome to join.

Hungaria Orchestra and Folk Ensemble (former Rajko Ensemble).
The programme is a mixture of folk dances, lively folk dance show performances with a partial narrative line as a context, and lots of folk music.

of course, there is a discounted student ticket for the Folk Show.
Smaller children, who don’t need their own seat (meaning they can sit in an adult’s lap) can come free of charge.
The venue of the Folk Show on Oct 14 will be the Danube Palace (Address: 5 Zrinyi Str Budapest H-1051).
