The Wine Catacomb Restaurant offers guests a traditional Hungarian evening in a wine cellar.

Located in Budafok, citadel of the Hungarian wine culture with its unique wine cellar system, which was awarded the honourable title of “The town of grape and wine”.

The restaurant is established in a former wine cellar of the Budafok cellar system, and is more than just a restaurant where you can enjoy delightful and famous Hungarian dishes, but it also hosts special folklore programs.

Folk dance ensembles and a 5-member folk group deliver performances specially choreographed for this place, in the very centre of the restaurant called Theatre Hall.

The folklore program consists of three parts, the first two parts presenting Hungarian dances, while the third mainly gypsy dance and music.

Museum of Ethnography in Budapest

Housed in an astonishing and grandiose Neo-Renaissance palace in Kossuth Square (meaning superb and easy to reach location) right across the Hungarian Parliament, the Museum of Ethnography has a collection of around quarter of a million objects on Hungarian folk traditions.

Being one of the earliest ethnographic museums in Europe, the Museum of Ethnography has been collecting, researching, archiving traditional and modern cultural artefacts of Hungarian and European communities since 1872.

Originally established as part of the Hungarian National Museum by the Austro-Hungarian professor and member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Alajos Hauszmann, the museum became an independent institution in 1947.

The staircase and the richly decorated walls of the museum along with the ceiling art alone are well worth the visit.

The Hungarian Heritage House in Budapest aims to cultivate, preserve and promote Hungarian folk tradition.

Hungarian Heritage House

Founded in 2001 by the Secretary of State for the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, this national institute comprises three divisions: the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble, the Folklore Documentation Centre, and the Folk Arts Department.

Purposes, such as to quest, preserve, systematize, arouse and keep alive the internal and external interest in folk traditions are extremely important nowadays.

The building itself was designed in an eclectic style by Aladar Arkay and Mor Kallina, and was constructed between 1898-1900 to serve the multiple cultural needs of the contemporary Buda middle-class. It was used as a theater, library and restaurant by the citizens of Buda.

The facade’s relative simplicity is in contrast with the rich Are Nouveau ornamentation in the interior, with the hall, its columns, the wide marble staircase, and the ornamented lounge.

From 1st October 2016 the Hungarian Heritage House is undergoing renovation for 20 months.

During this period most of the programmes will be found in external venues, such as:

About the Folk Music and Dance Night

The folk dancers are the members of the traditional folk ensemble called Folkrhythms, who gained show experience in the former, nationally and internationally acclaimed Rajko Folk Ensemble, honing their fine sophisticated dancing and singing skills, showing the traditions of the Hungarian folks of various regions in Hungary. The folk dance ensemble on the river cruise is 4 – 6 dancers, plus there is a quartet playing the folk dance music for the group. The members of FolkRhythms will take you for a lovely dance with them at the end of the night (only if you want to learn dancing!)

The Folk Dance includes Hungarian traditional dances, like the spectacular the Women’s Bottle Balancing Dance (women balancing fragile wine bottles on their heads while dancing) or the Men’s Stick Dances (men acting out shepherd with their herding sticks, making tricky dance moves as if fighting off enemies).
The Folk entertainment is followed by an interactive and fun workshop where you will get an opportunity to learn a bit of Hungarian Folk Dances.

Folk Show Venue and Departure of the Cruise
The venue of the Hungarian Folk Show is alternating on the two Danube riversides of Budapest, between the city central Danube Palace on the Pest side, and the Budai Vigado on the Buda side of the city of Budapest. The dock of the Dinner Cruise is adjusted to these venues, so that in either cases the departure of the cruise is very close to the Folk Show venue. After the Folk Show, hostesses will escort the guests to the Dock.
